When Ayan Ranjan (Ayushmann Khurana), a city-born IPS officer in charge of the Lalgaon Police Station in India 's heartland, realizes that he will have to tackle much more than he meets the eye soon enough. At one point early in the film, he tells his wife Aditi (Isha Talwar) exasperatedly on the phone, "It's like the wild wild west."
Having studied in Delhi 's St. Stephens and previously lived in Europe, Ayan is clearly at odds with the mentalities that accost him right from the word go at Lalgaon. Even as he struggles with the strong presence of caste discrimination and looming societal inequalities, he stumbles over the news of three girls who have been missing in a local factory for the past two days.
His friends, Bhramdutt and Jatav (Manoj Pahwa and Kumud Mishra) are telling him that the girls are likely to surface. But when two of them are found hanging from a tree the next morning it confirms that something has gone horribly wrong. There is nevertheless relentless pressure to close the case as soon as possible. "Aap logon ka move ho jata hai, humein maar diya jata hain," says the character of Pahwa as he tries to convince Ayan to sign off on the case file.
As the commanding police officer, Ayan is committed to getting to the bottom of this, refusing to buckle down despite barriers and threats lurking in nearly every corner. 'Article 15' by Anubhav Sinha is designed as a thriller for the crime. And what works for the film is that it's thought-provoking, hard-hitting while bringing to light unflinchingly burning social problems.
The film is high on atmospherics, contributing atmosphere to top-notch cinematography (Ewan Mulligan) and background music. The feeling is grim, gritty and grey, often with palpable tension in the air bringing a chill to the bone.
The images stand out – some provocative and uncomfortable, like the one where a man goes deep into a drain to unclog it and emerges soaked in the filth or the top shot of a group of policemen conducting a search with their torchlights in a swamp. The dialogs set an influence behind. And through his characters and setting the director brings out subtle nuances that add to the essence of the narrative.
The plot of the film, interspersed with potent and emotional scenes, leaves you with goose-bumps. The narrative definitely keeps you on the edge, but there are times when it feels overwhelmed by layers, political intricacies, and a multitude of characters. And sometimes the pace will dip.
But, certainly, one of the highlights of the film is the performances by an ace set of actors. As the sincere, determined police officer, Ayushmann Khurana has hooked you instantly, belting out a riveting performance. It is an intense, gripping act as it gets under his character's skin. Other noteworthy stealers of the scene include actors Manoj Pahwa, Kumud Mishra, and Mohammed Zeeshan Ayub, as Nishad in a short but impactful role.
'Article 15' isn't a gentle watch, but it's definitely relevant, compelling, and a movie that ignites discussion.
