Majili (2019) Movie Review

The idea on which Shiva Nirvana builds his new love story Majili is affection, heartbreak, and cricket. He slowly builds his characters around this, but there's a lot of emotional devastation and less love for the bulk of the film, while cricket is simply displayed as an aside — most of it is overstated and inaccurate.

Strangely enough, there are a lot of action scenes to a love tale like Majili. It seems people are willing to beat each other up at the drop of a hat in Vizag, where the film is based. And there is never any resolution to all the abuse. It all appeared to be part of a mysterious 'secret recipe' the director was seeking to find.

Yet still, despite all of this, Majili wins in keeping you interested and entertained all of the time. The film revolves around the unsuccessful cricketer Poorna (Naga Chaitanya) who turns out to be alcoholic and borrows money from his wife Sravani (Samantha) to get his daily booze workaround. He's a nuisance to his neighborhood and his dad (Rao Ramesh) is a constant source of concern.

But Sravani remains convinced he will come around, that finally, his wounds will heal. Except that his wounds aren't physical — they're emotional ones running so deep, it almost destroys him. Involving Anshu (Divyanka Kaushik), the daughter of a naval officer (Atul Agnihotri), is a failed love story (no surprises there).

Poorna falls for Anshu as a budding cricketer (in a traditional, dramatic hate-turn-love situation) and just as things appear to go smoothly he gets embroiled in a dispute with his coach, quits the squad and wants instead to work for a crooked politician Bhushan (Subbarao). And just like that, one bad decision will forever change his life.

Very sometimes the director appears to be in two minds and is unsure whether he needs to crack expectations or tick which box he feels is important to make the project successful. The film is exciting in a great many respects.

Every character depicted has its dimension and seems to have been nurtured with much thought, the music is beautiful, and the narrator's pain is portrayed without turning the movie into a sobfest. The director gets help from the lead cast with some brilliant performances. With its understated but strong results, Samantha outshines anyone else.

Chaitanya seems to be more in his aspect than the younger cricketer portrayed in the flashback sequences when he is playing the bearded, heartbroken alcoholic. Rao Ramesh and Posani Murali Krishna are the ones with outstanding performances that take this film beyond the sullen love tale of the protagonist.

For all its brilliant moments, Majili 's flaws are too glaring to ignore. For example, the director seems to be puzzled about what to do with the character of Subbbaraju. He is first seen as this wicked goon. He then is more effective but then becomes insignificant to either the story or the storyline. The film is a two halves story.

It starts a new story from an abrupt end to one love story, and it doesn't always convince — nor does the climax. But you sympathize with the protagonist as Majili plays out, feel his anxiety, and relate to his pain. The film has enough in it to keep you glued to the screen and Majili is worth a watch despite the untimely songs and unnecessary fights.
