Yevade Subramanyam (2015) Movie Review

With the reappearance of his childhood friend, Rishi, Subbu is an ambitious and greedy businessman whose perfect life goes topsy-turvy. Soon, Subbu is forced to embark on a journey to the Himalayas that forever changes his life.

There's a miraculous and serene thing about the mountains that makes you question your life. Maybe that's why a lot of people travel deep into the mountains on a spiritual path, hoping they'll find out the answer to, probably, their life's most important question – what's the purpose of my presence in this universe?

To have such an encounter is, to say the least, unreal. This is exactly the crux of the beautifully-layered Yevade Subramanyam by Nag Ashwin, who navigates a young man's life, trying to find out who he really is.

The main actor, Subbu (Nani) is an embodiment of ambition and envy, who plotted his life to the last detail, and his childhood friend, Rishi (Vijay Deverakonda), is in total contrast to Subbu's characterization. Rishi, a hippie at heart, believes one has to live life to the fullest and do whatever you want to do. He keeps coaxing Subbu to come with him to the Himalayan Doodh Kashi and that becomes an obsession for him.

We 're not told Rishi wants to find or do it there, but the journey itself sounds too exciting for him to forget about. There's one catch, though. Subbu has the duty to acquire a rival business which is complicated by the arrival of Anandi (Malavika Nair), whose whimsical personality catches him off balance.

The trio shares a fascinating relationship and Subbu is the odd one out on certain occasions. He knows he has nothing in common with either of them but is forced to stick with them. This, in turn, has a lasting impact on him for some time. There's a scene in the second half of the film where Subbu (Nani) is awestruck by the serene beauty of the Himalayas, and it takes a moment to sit back and think about his life.

They say that your eyes are doors to the soul. In this particular scene, it could not be truer in the case of Subbu. The desperation in his eyes disappears and is replaced by an alarming sense of awareness of life around him. From there on, we begin to understand that the sole purpose of his journey is to fulfill the last wish of his friend and, in the process, he is making peace with himself.

Yevade Subramanyam almost sounds like a memoir of someone who's been through a quarter-life struggle and managed to solve it. And how much of the suspense seems genuine is astounding.

Whether it's the conversations between Nani and Malavika Nair, or instances when Nani contemplates on his life and starts caring for others, it's all extremely well captured. A joy to watch is the three main actors, who are in full charge of their positions. There is no exaggeration or melodrama in the film, and he sounds like a voice of reason even when Rishi goes through a psychological disturbance.

Vijay Devarakonda and Malavika Nair are great finds and it would be a shame if their performances did not make you sit up and take notice of them. On the other hand, Nani digs deep into his talent arsenal to keep himself true to the character throughout the movie.

He starts out as an overgrown 10th-class kid blindsided by his ambition and becomes a man when he finds his intent high up in the snow-capped mountains in life. Yevade Subramanyam is going down at the box office as one of Nani's best movies regardless of her fate.

Kudos to Nag Ashwin and his team on making a heart and soul-filled film. It's a remarkably simple film that hides quite well its avalanche of emotions for all its philosophical undertones. It's a matter of how long you'll see what lies below. Then the moment you know what the film is all about, almost to an alarming degree it will leave you anxious.

Set everything you foresee from a Telugu film aside for once, and go for a journey that goes across the Himalayas and the darkest reaches of your subconscious. Yevade Subramanyam, despite his sly humor, is not a film where you'll laugh loudly. It's a moment you have to savor right up to the very end. Just like creation itself.
