Arjun Suravaram (2019) Movie Review

Arjun Suravaram is for the uninitiated the Telugu remake of the 2016 Tamil film Kanithan, also written and directed by TN Santhosh, who happens to be the prodigy of AR Murugadoss. The plot, that of an investigative reporter who finds himself in the middle of a huge fraud, is an interesting one that suits the mentor and has the possibility to be a thriller that is engaging.

The concerns just emerge as the stakes get bigger as more plot lines are put in, with everything emerging as a short tale instead of adding up to anything meaningful. Yet not all is forgotten, as with this remake Santhosh certainly reigned it in.

Arjun Lenin Suravaram (Nikhil Siddarth) is an investigative journalist who seems to have a huge heart and works for a small tv channel. His father (Nagireddy), who is also a journalist, trusts in journalism's old-school practices and integrity but doesn't want his son to be a part of the filthy, dishonest, shifting world.

Kavya (Lavanya Tripathi) is his co-worker and mother, a helping pillar when he is brought through the wringer. His friends Rambabu and Balaji (Satya and Vennela Kishore) are also thrown into the mix, along with Balaji 's father-a constable (Posani Krishna Murali), who form the motley crew trying to take down the person in charge of it all (Tarun Arora).

Despite so much going on, it's no wonder that the movie takes its own precious time setting up the characters and making sure you believe in each of them, at least. The way the film begins is fascinating, no time wasted in revealing just how serious the condition of Arjun really is.

But as the story unfolds, it loses momentum, and the love track between Arjun and Kavya seems to take time there, particularly as it transforms into the perfect damsel-in-distress, wandering recklessly into the lair of the villain without any second thought. Even worse is the 'comedy' that involves
Vidyut Raman wasting even more time before he gets into the thick of things.

Which kind of plays are the parts of the film that include the plot Arjun is a reluctant member of? Yet even those work in bits and pieces, mainly because of Surya's cinematography, where the parts struggle to tie together smoothly. The director is laudable trying to understand how much more is at stake here than Arjun 's image and career.

Nikhil Siddharth, Vennela Kishore, Satya, and Posani Krishna Murali capture the spotlight with their performances, even when Santhosh's screenplay meanders, bringing gravitas. Tarun Arora and Lavanya Tripathi appear sadly trapped in roles that don't give them anything to do because they're supposed to be the quintessential villain and heroine.

The music of Sam CS, even though the background score contributes to some scenes, does not add or take anything away.

This could have been gold with a much tighter screenplay and a straightforward approach and for the most part it is. The cinematic liberties which have been taken to overcome the ambiguity too are nagging, but nothing that can not be overlooked. Arjun Suravaram needs to be watched, even though it provides anything above the normal love stories to add a novel tale to Tollywood only because of that. And watch it for Nikhil particularly, you do not regret it!
