When a quirk of destiny sends both Riya and Subbalakshmi on the same day to Hyderabad, with Krishna and Arjun closely behind, things go awry. Without a hint to be found, all the ladies go missing, while Krishna and Arjun plan to take matters into their own hands and pursue their lady loves in 48 hours' time. Henceforth 'Krishnarjuna Yuddham' morphs from a romantic comedy to a thriller that aims to be intense and taut but fails.
Disappeared in the second half are the amusing mates of Krishna who can not read correctly in English and Arjun 's boss and best friend Brahmaji who loathes the tone-deaf aunt of Subbalakshmi's having to teach music lessons. Instead, sex trafficking, narcotics, abduction, cliched police officers who are too incompetent to do their work, battling high octane and chasing scenes, and so on.
In the end, we hope with all our might that Nani returns to doing lovely and easy stories like 'Astha Chamma,' 'Pilla Zamindar,' or even the fairly recent launches like 'Yevade Subramanyam,' 'Bhale Bhale Mogadivoy,' and 'Ninnu Kori,' so we don't have to go through anything like that again.
Do not get us incorrect, Nani excels like the impulsive Krishna in this one, it is only the playboy Arjun who leaves us crying. Through her role as the beautiful and independent Subbalakshmi, Anupama Parameswaran aces, and is a joy to watch on television. Her characterization is on target until she overreacts spontaneously and for a fleeting moment shows psychopathic tendencies.
Even Rukshar Mir looks cute in her part, although the habit of mouthing her character off the science names seems to get on the nerves of the crowd if the theater sighs were something to go by. Walking away from the movie, the only memories one happily takes back are the glimpse of Nani dancing to 'Dhaari Choodu' with childish abandon, the funny scenes that elevate the first half, and the fact that his friend spells the name of Riya as Royya.
In a film that touches upon the issue of slavery of human beings, there are sure bombs to prove a case. But also, may we please get the Nani 'Natural Star' back to doing non-masala stories?
