Businessman (2012) Movie Review

A film like "Businessman" is a reason to rejoice, precisely because it removes the narrative's unwanted comic interjections. The humor in a Telugu popular film is all situational, without being a slapstick for once. Humor is shallow and loaded with sarcasm, taking potshots under the sun on everything, but still doing the job evoking laughter peals. Kudos to Puri Jagannath, the director for coming up with those words.

But then there's Mahesh Babu that too, in full flow. "Cheyalanukuntunnara is confused with round off chesi. Confusion lo kottestha lo inka ekkuva ... "Goes into a hit talk. One goes, "Matladaniki vacchanu kabatti, manasaupurthy ga kottatledu ...." It is definitely a step up as far as humor goes. Some would say the punch dialogs in "Businessman" are even better, wackier, and more quirky than "Pokiri." A Mahesh Babu pot-boilers must-haves are dutifully ticked off, very good at that. Five minutes into the movie, you get the feeling you'll enjoy this one, and the feeling stays on until the end.

There's no one coming to the story. Mahesh plays Surya Bhai, who is moving with a single point agenda to Mumbai — that of becoming the undisputed gift of the underworld of business capital. It happens to be a time when Mumbai is enjoying a fairly crime-free era with nabbing all the mafia kingpins, much to the glee of Nassar, the police commissioner.

His happiness proves to be short-lived as Surya starts hiring all of the goons in the area. He calls exports and imports to his gang Surya. He soon begins cutting off dealings with all and sundry — small-time businessmen to the biggest politicians, including the prime minister.

Dominating all of the mafia business and slowly evolves into law for himself. He also has a bit of flashback that's revealed towards the end. Chitra (Kajal Aggarwal) is a police commissar 's daughter. She too happens to be the love interest of Surya. It also turns out fine to the much-hyped lip-lock.

"Businessman" is a typical Jagannath Puri movie loaded with style and attitude. The story moves at a breakneck pace that barely gives you time to catch your breath. Without going overboard the action is gritty and believable. In "Pokiri," the leading lady, Kajal plays the eye-candy to perfection, despite not getting the kind of 'Ileana' effect

You can't help but equate this one to the 2006 hit since this is the first time since "Pokiri" that Puri and Mahesh have come together. Mahesh takes the cake in as far as the results go. He had the role of author-backed but still enlivens an intense performance to the whole film. The climax scene is especially riveting, as Mahesh moves seamlessly from indignation to comedy.

Which has to be one of his best if not the best ones. Mahesh literally carries the movie from beginning to end. The supporting cast including Sayaji Shinde, Prakash Raj, and Subba Raju do their roles justice. Thaman 's music is fine, and the background score stands out, which amplifies the experience.

The film ranks high on visual storytelling and production principles. Altogether, it is an unpretentious entertainer who manages to find the right balance. Maybe it's not a theatrical wonder, but it sure has enough to keep you entertained until the end. How much you like the film maybe just a matter of how fond you are of Mahesh Babu.
