It is important to highlight here that Kalyana Vaibhogame has an intriguing idea – representing the relentless stresses experienced by two separate generations and the ensuing tensions that may inevitably clash with normal lives. All this is achieved with the aid of a girl and a boy, and their families which are not quite good.
The battle is half-won for director Nandini Reddy because she has the perfect cast. Shaurya (Naga Shaurya) is averse to marriage because he is actually not ready yet. Divya (Malavika Nair) doesn't like being married because she feels she's just going to have to live a life of compromise just like her mother (Raasi in an extremely underplayed and amazing comeback), who was athletic as a kid but just settled down after marriage for serving her husband.
Her father (Anand) is a politician and believes that marriage is the duty of a girl. Shaurya has a brother who is suffering from Down's Syndrome and his mother (Aishwarya) is fascinated with him and her daughter, whose only wish is to see her grandson married; she also cooks (a lot) while she goes through an emotional upheaval.
His father (Raj Madiraju) is a retired man who sees retirement as his path to freedom and the means to experience all that he couldn't do because he lost his childhood due to early employment.
And the best thing is they all nail it, in terms of results, and carry every character to life. But here lies the issue.
Since the plot still falls flat with so many intriguing characters present, and has little new to share, turning them into caricatures. The film begins with a very fascinating note with the would-be-bride and the would-be-groom in their Pelli choopulu telling each other that they are not interested in marriage.
But once they are forced to meet some rather strange prospective spouses, they happen to meet each other and to devise a plan for "temporary marriage." And the birth is where Joyful reminds us. To keep the families together, they live in the same house, and they are good friends. But obviously, love is destined eventually.
And from here on, the movie follows a downward path. The film touches upon envy, possessiveness, confidence, anticipation, frustration, and eventual surprise with a very slow plot. And for some reason, given too many feelings, it feels clearly too thin. You would expect this film to illustrate to parents what the children want, and vice versa.
Yet that's not true, and we are only being put into the traditional Telugu movie style where passion takes over every other emotion. The film doesn't even show you anything new to take home and you're left with boring scenes with the families finding out about the facts, the couple finally falling for each other and they 're going to live happily afterward, obviously.
Kalyana Vaibhogame with some lovely musical renditions and commendable camera work is a feel-good picture. Yet that's not enough as it gives you nothing new and leaves you continuously in the sensation with déjà vu of many love stories you've seen over the years.
